State Sen. Frank Padavan fits the profile of a lawmaker who would fight every gun-control bill that came onto the floor of the New York Senate.

He's a conservative Republican, a hunter and a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. But Padavan introduced a bill in 1989 that would nearly ban assault weapons across the state.
